Textual Analysis of a College Magazine Front Cover (Image)

Textual Analysis of a College Magazine Front Cover

Textual Analysis of a College Magazine Front Cover

Denotation: There is a picture of a blonde, young, female student who goes college, she is wearing a red t-shirt and blue shorts. And in the background is a row of trees and grass which is out of focus. Then there is the name of the college magazine which is “College,” and five sub heading of topics being discussed inside the magazine.
Connotation: The picture of the young lady in revealing clothes could say the weather where ever she is, is nice which is evident in the picture.  I believe this magazine appeal to both males and females as the issues are general question which would interest both genders.
Mise-en-scene/ Costume:  The colour of her clothes blue and red, the colour blue represents a cool and relaxing atmosphere and red represents love and romance. And they incorporated the colours of her clothes which is the colour scheme for the title and subheadings on the front cover of the college magazine.
Setting: The setting of the magazine cover is outside on a courtyard and gives an impression to the audience that the weather is nice in a friendly type of way. It is also a natural environment (eco-friendly) so it opens to a range of audiences.
Lighting: The lighting in this magazine cover is a low key lighting because as I analysed the front cover the light is coming from an acute angle from the right which leaves her right arm and a quarter of her body in the dark and as it reaches the left hand side of her body is starts to get bright, especially from her smile to emphasize her smile is glowing and also gives a friendly impression. Also in the background the grass is also bright nearly blinding then the trees have a low key lighting but as it get to the top it turns bright but is out of focus.
Non Verbal Communication (NVC): The non verbal communication this young lady is giving of in her face expression is nice, friendly, approachable and cute and gives an impression to the male audience that this girl is nice looking and intrigues males. Her body language in her stance is that she open for a conversation and is easy to approach because her hands are by her side, but if she had her arms crossed that would mean she doe not want to be approached. And she is giving straight, direct eye contact to the camera which shows that she is focused and not daydreaming looking around at her surroundings.
Anchorage: The font used for this college magazine is a Sans Serif Font which is very modern as it has no flick up and no traits of tradition so the font is very modern in the 21st century, but is done in block capitals so it stands out and grabs the attention of the audience.

IMAGE ANALYSIS

By using the Rule Of Thirds theory I have acknowledged that in the second square the have put her face perfectly in the middle which creates energy as that is what most of the audience would concentrate on as the lighting makes her face the focal point of the magazine and catches peoples interest.
This magazine has symmetrical composition as the young lady is in the middle, so normally these compositions will often give of a sense of organisation and order of control. And in my opinion there is a lot of organisation as her body is in the middle the topics around her body are shaped in the outline of her body and the title in behind her head and colour scheme was very clever.
Depth of Field: The depth of field in is a narrow depth of field as the young lady is the embodiment of the college magazine as she is placed in the middle and she is the focus point and also the subheadings and questions surrounding her body. And the background which is probably a college courtyard with trees and grass is out of focus which means the audience does not really need to pay attention to the background but still letting them know the there is a courtyard in the background . So her body appears sharp as which is the opposite as the background.
There is no juxtaposition in this picture as it is just one young lady with no added effects e.g. her body split with a evil and good side or a contrast between male and females, poor and rich or black and white.
